Kawala Play

The kawala is one of the oldest instruments in Arabic music and is traditionally used in laments. The video Kawala play shows the end of a kawala in close-up. While a continuous, meditative tone sounds, one can watch a soap bubble grow. The lively play of colors and reflections appears to be a visual realization of the tone. As the bubble grows, its iridescent membrane becoming increasingly lighter and more transparent, it mirrors the room ever more clearly – until the sound stops and the bubble bursts.
Die Kawala ist eines der ältesten Instrumente der arabischen Musik und wird traditionell für Klagelieder eingesetzt. Das Video kawala play zeigt die Mündung einer Kawala. Während ein durchgängiger, meditativer Laut erklingt, kann man das Wachsen einer Seifenblase beobachten. Das lebhafte Spiel der Farben und Reflektionen erscheint als visuelle Umsetzung des Tones. Mit der wachsenden Blase, deren schillernde Membran zunehmend heller und transparenter wird, hebt sich die Spiegelung des Raumes immer klarer hervor – bis der Ton abbricht und die Blase zerplatzt.
